At approximately 03:24 on the morning of May 10, 2026, my Gmail account — a freshly registered address I had set up specifically to automate Google Tasks synchronization via OAuth — was suspended by Google without warning. No email notification. No appeal prompt. Just a locked door.
The account had existed for less than two weeks. In that time, it had performed exactly what I designed it to do: sync tasks from a NocoDB database to Google Tasks every 15 to 30 minutes through authorized API calls. Nothing malicious. No spam. No bulk emailing.
And yet, Google’s automated systems flagged it as a bot-generated account and shut it down.
This post is a thorough post-mortem of what happened, why it happened, and what I learned about Google’s risk detection model in the age of AI agents.
The Setup

The system worked beautifully for its first night. It synced 14 Family Tasks and 151 Work Board tasks across 9 people’s Google Tasks lists. Everything was running smoothly.
And then the account was gone.
What Google Saw
From Google’s perspective, this is what the account’s behavior looked like:
1. A Brand New Account Acting Like a Machine
Google maintains what I call an “account maturity model.” New accounts — especially those less than 30 days old — are under heightened scrutiny. Normal human behavior for a new account involves:
- Manual sign-ins from a personal device
- Reading and sending a few emails
- Browsing Google services casually
- Gradually establishing usage patterns
What my account did instead:
- Never had a single manual email interaction
- Immediately began making API calls every 15 minutes
- Operated on exact, clockwork intervals (
:00,:15,:30) - Showed zero human-like pauses or random behavior
To Google’s risk scoring system, this is the textbook definition of a bot-generated account.
2. Heartbeat + Cron = Double Exposure
The OpenClaw framework has a built-in heartbeat mechanism that wakes the agent every 30 minutes to check for tasks, messages, and system health. On top of that, I had configured:

The combined pattern had zero randomness. No jitter, no delays, no human-like variation. It was a perfect metronome — and Google’s detection systems are specifically trained to identify metronomic behavior.
3. Excessive OAuth Scope
I authorized the application with a broad set of permissions:
gmail.readonly— read all emailsgmail.modify— modify emails and labels- Google Tasks — full read/write access
For a new account, suddenly granting and exercising this level of access through automated API calls is a major red flag. In Google’s risk model, this pattern closely resembles an account compromise — as if someone had stolen credentials and was using them programmatically.
4. The 2026 Google Crackdown on AI Agent Frameworks
Here is the broader context: in late February 2026, Google began大规模 (mass-scale) enforcement actions against users of OpenClaw and similar AI agent frameworks that connect to Google services via OAuth.
According to reports from the community, the trigger was a massive mismatch between subscription costs and actual API usage. An Ultra subscription user ($20-$250/month) could generate API token consumption worth $1,000-$3,600/month through OpenClaw’s automated features — a commercial loss Google was unwilling to absorb.
The enforcement did not discriminate between abusers and compliant users. Many legitimate, paying users were caught in the crossfire, with bans issued without warning and appeals going unanswered.

How Google Detects “Abnormal Accounts”
From researching this incident and reading similar cases, Google’s detection model appears to be multidimensional:
Behavioral Analysis
- Request frequency beyond human capability — Can a real person perform this many actions per hour?
- Lack of human-like behavior — Humans pause, think, make mistakes, act at irregular intervals. Bots are precise, regular, and fast.
- Unusual token consumption curve — A sudden surge in API token usage within a short period is a primary indicator of automation abuse.
Network Fingerprinting
- IP reputation — Data center IPs are flagged more aggressively than residential ones.
- Geolocation consistency — Requests jumping between countries in short timeframes trigger alerts.
- Device fingerprint — A single device fingerprint linked to multiple automated accounts raises the abnormality score.
OAuth Pattern Analysis
- Scope mismatch — Authorizing personal login rights to automated programs performing high-frequency tasks.
- Behavioral shift — Accounts suddenly switching from “human mode” to “machine mode” may be flagged as compromised.
- Terms of service violations — Using personal accounts for commercial-level automation violates platform pricing expectations.
What I Would Do Differently
If I were to set this up again — and I plan to, once I register a replacement account — here is what I would change:
Immediate Fixes (Critical)
1. Use a dedicated “work account” — never your primary Gmail
The account that got banned was a secondary address, which minimized the damage. But I should have gone further and used an account that had been manually active for at least 2-4 weeks before connecting any automation.
2. Implement random delays in all cron scripts
Replace exact intervals with randomized timing:

5. Use API Keys instead of OAuth for high-intensity scenarios
For automated, high-frequency operations, Google Cloud API Keys (separate from user OAuth) are the more appropriate access method. They are designed for programmatic access and do not carry the same risk signals as user account automation.
6. Simulate human behavior patterns
Add random intervals between operations. Occasionally skip a cycle. Introduce noise into the timing. The goal is to make the access pattern indistinguishable from a human who happens to be very diligent about checking their tasks.
Long-Term Strategy
7. Maintain a pool of backup accounts
If automation is essential, rotate between 2-3 accounts to avoid overloading any single account with API traffic.
8. Monitor API usage and set alerts
Track token consumption and request frequency. Set automatic throttling when thresholds are approached.
9. Consider local-only alternatives
For the FT/WB task synchronization use case, a NocoDB-to-NocoDB sync or a local dashboard would eliminate the Google dependency entirely.
The Broader Lesson
This incident taught me something important about the current state of AI agent automation:
Google does not care whether you are paying or playing by the rules. It only cares whether your behavior pattern looks human.
The detection systems are not designed to punish abuse — they are designed to eliminate anything that deviates from normal human usage patterns. In that model, even perfectly legitimate automation can look like a threat.
The era of “set it and forget it” automation with Google services through personal accounts is coming to an end. If you want to build reliable integrations, you need to think like a risk engineer: minimize signals, add noise, respect the maturity curve, and always have a backup plan.
